Some background: During 1988 - 1991, our founding member Dieter Roth, Owner of
Custom Automotive Services, Oshawa, Ont., was heavily involved in Z-Car
racing (GT2, GTU IMSA, Ice Racing) as owner, mechanic, crew chief,
driver and enthusiast.
In 1991 there was a
realization that "Not in the history of the automobile, including
Bugatti, Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Porsche, etc., has anyone produced a
sports car that does so much for so little".
There was also a
realization that Z parts and collective enthusiasm were both present in
our area, so Dieter and several other Z car fanatics decided to try to
form a Z-Car Club based out of Custom Automotive Services, Oshawa.
An ad was placed in
the TORONTO STAR, strategically placed flyers were distributed, and word
of mouth fired up the club in October of 1993 with 12 members.
Official founding
members: Dieter Roth, J.P. Matte, Scott Taras and Steve Tustin.
- The 1st official elections were
held Nov. 93 electing the first executive:
- PRES: Scott Taras
- VP: Sean Williamson
- Treas/Secr: Dieter Roth
- Editor: Brad Guinn
The OZC Club met
monthly (1st Tuesday at 8pm), and we had several club events planned
along with 9-10 newsletters. Membership
was only $25/yr. but we had no club insurance nor any affiliation with
anyone who could provide it. We
spent 11/93 - 11/94 building membership to 40 active members. Our first official scheduled club event was a BBQ in an Oshawa
park ...it was rained out and everyone got lost anyway (This led to the
decision for the need for an Events Director on future executives). We
did successfully execute several club events like a Show & Shine,
Cruises, and participation on the track at Mosport. The "Flying Z" first appeared in the
club newsletter in May '95. The Red circle behind the Z represents the Japanese origin of the Z. Just
look at the Japanese national flag. The faux granite finish of the Z represents the age and timeless
nature of the vehicle. The tattered checkered flag speaks for itself.
Our Mission :
A network of enthusiasts dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of the Nissan/Datsun Z Car through regularly scheduled meetings, newsletters, occasional sporting, display and social events.
The Ontario Z Car Owner's Association (OZC) is a not for profit organization originally founded in October 1993 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. OZC was formally incorporated in 2000 at London, Ontario. The Club is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of the Nissan/Datsun Z Car.
Ontario Z Car is open to all and any interested owners of the Nissan/Datsun Z Car. Although the club is primarily focused on the Z Car we also encourage owners of related Nissan/Datsun vehicles such as the 510, 1200, and 1600/2000 Roadsters to join. Members of the club are not required to be residents of Ontario or even Canada. |
